Walter John Montagu-Douglas-Scott, 8th Duke of Buccleuch KT GCVO TD PC ( December 30, 1894 - October 4, 1973 ) was a British peer and politician of the Conservative Party .

Life

He was the eldest son of John Montagu-Douglas-Scott, 7th Duke of Buccleuch , and Lady Margaret Alice Bridgeman, daughter of George Bridgeman, 4th Earl of Bradford . As apparent marriage of his father until 1914 led the courtesy title of Lord Whitchester and from 1914 to 1935 that of the Earl of Dalkeith .

He attended Eton College and Christ Church College at the University of Oxford . He embarked on an officer career in the British Army and became a captain in the Grenadier Guards . From 1923 to 1930 he was the commanding officer of the King's Own Scottish Borderers . He later became captain general of the Royal Company of Archers .

From 1923 he was a member of the Scottish Unionist Party in the House of Commons for the constituency of Roxburghshire and Selkirkshire . He left the House of Commons in 1935 when he inherited his father as the 8th Duke of Buccleuch and 10th Duke of Queensberry and thereby received a seat in the House of Lords . In the House of Commons he was followed by his brother Lord William Scott as MP in his constituency .

His sister Alice married Henry, 1st Duke of Gloucester (one of Elizabeth II 's paternal uncles ) in 1935 , making her a member of the British royal family . Walter was beaten to the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order shortly thereafter in 1935 .

In 1937 he received the office of Lord Steward of the Household . He is said to have met the German ambassador Joachim von Ribbentrop in London , was criticized as pro-German and finally had to give up the court office in 1940.

After the war he held the post of Justice of the Peace for Dumfriesshire and Roxburghshire and was Deputy Lieutenant of Selkirkshire. In 1949 he was accepted as a Knight Companion in the Thistle Order . 1953, he was from the University of Edinburgh in 1956 and from the University of St Andrews , the honorary doctorate awarded.

Marriage and offspring

On April 21, 1921, he married Vreda Esther Mary Lascelles, granddaughter of William Beauclerk, 10th Duke of St. Albans . The marriage had three children:

He died on October 4, 1973 and was buried in the ruins of Melrose Abbey . His titles of nobility fell to his son.
