George Willis (politician)

Eustace George Willis (March 7, 1903 , † March 2, 1987 ) was a British politician.

Life

Willis was born in 1903. He attended the City of Norwich School in Norwich, England and then joined the Royal Navy . After his military service between 1919 and 1930, Willis worked as a bookseller and until 1964 as a lecturer at the National Council of Labor Colleges .

Political career

In the 1945 general election , the first post-war election, Willis ran for the Labor Party in the Edinburgh North constituency . He narrowly won the mandate against his rival Sir Alexander Erskine-Hill, 1st Baronet , of the Unionist Party , who had held the mandate since the previous 1935 elections . As a result, Willis moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . In the following general election in 1950 he was clearly defeated by the unionist James Latham Clyde and left the House of Commons. In the 1951 elections , Willis failed to regain the mandate. Until the constituency was dissolved as part of the reform in 1983, Willis was to remain the only Labor MP for Edinburgh North.

To fulfill his obligations as a judge, John Wheatley , who had held the mandate of the neighboring constituency of Edinburgh East since 1947, gave it back in 1954. At the required by-elections in the constituency, Willis ran as Wheatley's successor for the Labor Party. With a share of the vote of 57.6%, he prevailed against the unionist challenger and was again given a seat in the House of Commons. Willis defended this in the subsequent general election in 1959 , 1964 and 1966 . At the general election in 1970 Willis joined not more. His party colleague Gavin Strang won the mandate .

Between 1954 and 1955 Willis was a chairman of the Scottish Labor Party . He also held a junior ministerial post in the Scotland Ministry between October 1964 and January 1967 .
