Political career

For the Labor Party , Gilmore was elected to the Edinburgh City Council for the Moredun district in 1991 . She defended her seat until 2007. For the Scottish parliamentary elections in 2007 , Gilmore ran for the first time for national elections. In her constituency of Edinburgh Pentlands , however, she received only the second highest share of the vote behind the conservative David McLetchie and thus missed the entry into the Scottish Parliament .

In the run-up to the British House of Commons elections in 2010 , Labor politician Gavin Strang , who had represented the constituency of Edinburgh East in the House of Commons since 1970 , announced that he would not be available for any further election. From an internal party vote in April 2009, Gilmore emerged as the successor of Strang by just one vote. On election day she held the mandate clearly for the Labor Party and subsequently moved into the House of Commons for the first time. After a heavy loss of votes, Gilmore had to surrender to the SNP politician Tommy Sheppard in the following general election in 2015 and left parliament at the end of the parliamentary term.
