The Gateway is a glacial ice- filled mountain pass at sea level on the Shackleton Coast of Antarctica's Ross Dependency . It is located between Cape Allen and Mount Hope on the northeastern edge of the Queen Alexandra chain and provides access from the Ross Ice Shelf to the Beardmore Glacier .
The pass was discovered by participants in the Nimrod expedition (1907–1909) of the British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton while looking for a route through the Transantarctic Mountains to the polar plateau and on to the geographic South Pole .
