Tekkie

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tekkie [tɛki] (also techie ) is a slang term from English for an enthusiastic user or inventor of technical achievements of various kinds.

The word Tekkie or Techie is phonetically derived from the English word "tech (nical)" or "technician". It appeared in the English-speaking world in the 1960s. At first it was used colloquially as an abbreviation for "technical college student", later also as an abbreviation for technical experts in various professions, for example in the field of stage technology. Since the 1980s, the spelling with the double "k" has prevailed, as this means that the correct spelling [tek-ee] is maintained across countries.

In contrast to the related typifications nerd and geek , Tekkie does not stand for subcultural outsiders and computer geeks , but can be applied to anyone who is passionate about technology. Tekkies can be people who study at a technical university or work in a technical profession, for example as an engineer or software developer , or who work in areas such as research , aerospace and the automotive industry. However, the term can also be applied to simply tech-savvy people, for example from the do-it-yourself culture . Many occupy themselves as hobbyists , makers or tinkerers in their free time , for example in the field of model construction . With the introduction of modern computer and smartphone technology into everyday life, the term Tekkie is now also used for pure technology users, for example in the areas of smart homes or the Internet of Things .
