Samuel Fleming Barr

Samuel Fleming Barr (born June 15, 1829 in Coleraine , United Kingdom , †  May 29, 1919 in San Diego , California ) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1885 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1831 Samuel Barr came from Northern Ireland with his family to Harrisburg , Pennsylvania, where he attended public schools. In 1855 and 1856 he worked as a freight agent for the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne & Chicago Railroad railroad companies. At the beginning of the Civil War , he worked for the government-controlled railroad in the metropolitan area of ​​the federal capital Washington, DC Barr later got into the newspaper business. Between 1873 and 1878 he published the Harrisburg Telegraph . Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party .

In the congressional election of 1880 Barr was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the 14th  constituency of Pennsylvania, where he succeeded John Weinland Killinger on March 4, 1881 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1885 . In 1884 he renounced another candidacy.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Samuel Barr withdrew into retirement, which he alternately in San Diego and Seal Harbor in the State of Maine spent. He died on May 29, 1919 in San Diego, where he was also buried.
