Urban District

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An Urban District (German Städtischer Bezirk ) was in the United Kingdom and Ireland a municipal administrative unit as part of a county . Unlike the rural district ( rural district ) extend the urban districts to urban areas. Local government responsibilities are shared between the Urban District Council and the County Council .

An urban district was not a borough and therefore did not have a mayor . The Urban Districts were established in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in the late 19th century .

They persist in Ireland to this day, but are simply referred to as towns . They were launched in England and Wales in 1894. With the local government reform of 1974 they were abolished and replaced by larger districts . Since then, so-called Parish Councils have been set up in many urban districts . In Northern Ireland , the Urban Districts were dissolved in 1973 and replaced by 26 new districts.
