The Portas de Benfica are an ensemble of two former customs houses in the municipality of Benfica in the Portuguese capital Lisbon .

history

The Portas de Benfica are at the end of the Estrada da Benfica , which is the historic road to the northwest, on the border between the city of Lisbon and the Amadora district . In the 19th century they were one of 26 entrances to the city. Until 1892 they housed a tax post that defined the border of the Lisbon tax district.

As one of the few buildings, the Portas de Benfica survived the uncontrolled settlement expansion in this part of the city, but fell into disrepair. On December 7, 1996, the owner, the Portuguese Ministry of Finance , started the renovation.

Once this has been completed, the north building will serve as the headquarters of the Associação da Comunidade de São Tomé e Príncipe and the Orquestra da Felicidade . In 2001, the Benfica municipal administration housed the Em Cada Rosto Igualdade information center in the south building .

The Portas de Benfica are transport hubs. This is where the Carris bus lines in Lisbon meet the Vimeca lines in the districts of Oeiras , Amadora and Sintra .
