Bellersdorf special ammunition depot

The Bellersdorf special ammunition depot was located on a wooded hill north of Mittenaar - Bellersdorf in the Lahn-Dill district . The special ammunition dump was built around 1965. Tactical nuclear weapons were stored in it, which were jointly guarded by a unit of the 557th US Army Artillery Group and German soldiers. At the same time, the Aartal barracks , where these soldiers were stationed, were built. The Americans withdrew in 1992, the German soldiers in 1993. After the buildings and towers were demolished, the area was initially used as the underground storage facility for the Lahn-Dill district. In 2015, the Mittenaar-Bellersdorf solar park was put into operation on part of the site.
