Miron Nicolescu (born August 27, 1903 in Giurgiu , † June 30, 1975 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian mathematician .

Life

Miron Nicolescu was born in Giurgiu in southern Romania in 1903. He studied mathematics at the University of Bucharest until 1924 , and then finished his studies in Paris at the École normal supérieure and at the Sorbonne . In 1928 he received his doctorate under Paul Montel with the dissertation Fonctions complexes dans le plan et dans l'espace . After his return to Romania he taught at the National Jurij Fedkowytsch University in Chernivtsi until 1940 , after which he was appointed professor at the University of Bucharest. His students included Ciprian Foias and Solomon Marcus .

He became an associate member of the Romanian Academy in 1936 , a full member in 1953, President of the Institute of Mathematics of the Romanian Academy in 1963 and President of the entire Romanian Academy in 1966, which he remained until his death. In 1972 he was accepted into the Leopoldina .

At the International Congress of Mathematicians in Vancouver in 1974 he was elected Vice President of the International Mathematical Union .

Nicolescu died in 1975 at the age of 71.
