Ciprian Ilie Foias (born July 20, 1933 in Reșița , Romania ; † March 22, 2020 in Tempe , Arizona ) was a Romanian-American mathematician .

Life

Foias received his doctorate in 1962 at the Institute of Mathematics of the Romanian Academy of Sciences in Bucharest with Miron Nicolescu and completed his habilitation (doctorate according to Eastern European custom) in 1968 at the University of Bucharest , where he was professor from 1966. From 1979 he was a professor at the University of Paris-Süd in Orsay (until 1983) and at the same time at Indiana University , where he was Distinguished Professor from 1983. From 2000 he was a professor at Texas A&M University , most recently as a Distinguished Professor.

Foias dealt with the theory of operators in Hilbert spaces , application of methods of the theory of dynamic systems in partial differential equations (and investigation of the Navier-Stokes equations ), interpolation theory , Toeplitz operators . He practiced and applied research as signal processing in geophysics , control theory , economics , statistical theory of turbulence, estimate the dimension of attractors in hydrodynamics .

In 1995 he received the Norbert Wiener Prize . He was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1987) and an honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1993) and the Romanian Academy (1994). In 1998 he was an Ulam Scholar at Los Alamos National Laboratory . In 2000 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Amsterdam and received the first Béla Szőkefalvi Nagy medal . In 1978 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Helsinki (Contractive intertwining dilations and waves in layered media) and in 1970 in Nice (Some applications of structural models for operators on Hilbert space) .

His PhD students included Dan Voiculescu and Adrian Ocneanu .

He died at home in March 2020 at the age of 86.
