Éric Chouinard (born July 8, 1980 in Atlanta , Georgia ) is a retired Canadian - American ice hockey player . Most recently he played with the Bayreuth Tigers in the DEL2 . He is the son of former NHL player Guy Chouinard , and his cousin Marc was also active there.

Career

After 296 points in 180 games with the Québec Remparts in the Canadian Junior League Québec Major Junior Hockey League , the center was selected in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft in the first draft round in 16th overall position by the Montréal Canadiens . After his time with the Canadiens and their farm team , the Québec Citadelles from the AHL , the left-handed shooter also played for the Philadelphia Flyers and the Minnesota Wild , where he ran up with his cousin Marc Chouinard in the 2003/04 season. Chouinard spent the lockout of the 2004/05 NHL season at EC Red Bull Salzburg from the Austrian ice hockey league .

For the 2006/07 season , the Canadian, who also has US citizenship because of his birthplace Atlanta, where his father was on the ice in the NHL, moved to the second-rate Swiss National League B to HC Sierre-Anniviers and then to Russia Yaroslavl locomotive . Here, however, the attacker was not used due to an injury and signed a contract with the Straubing Tigers from the German Ice Hockey League in the middle of the 2006/07 season . In the 2007/08 season , Chouinard was voted the sixth best center in the DEL by the ice hockey magazine Eishockey News .

On January 19, 2009, the Straubing Tigers announced the suspension of Chouinard. This was preceded by permanent tensions between the player and the club.

From the 2009/10 season to the end of the 2012/13 season, Chouinard was under contract with the Thomas Sabo Ice Tigers in Nuremberg.

In the 2013/14 season he first played for the Belarusian KHL representative HK Dinamo Minsk , then after eight games he moved to Norway to Vålerenga Ishockey in Norway's capital Oslo.

From the 2014/15 season Chouinard was under contract with the French first division club Grenoble Métropole Hockey 38 . In 2017 he temporarily ended his career and became a scout . During the 2017/18 season he started training again and received a contract with the Bayreuth Tigers from the DEL2 in November 2017 .

Chouinard ended his career in 2018.
