Ralfs Freibergs (born May 17, 1991 in Riga , Latvian SSR ) is a Latvian ice hockey player on the position of defender. Since October 2015 he has been under contract with the Toledo Walleye in the ECHL .

Career

Freibergs began his career at HK Prizma Riga , for which he made his debut in the Latvian ice hockey league in the 2008/09 season . He then moved to Dinamo Juniors Riga , Dinamo Riga's youth team , which competed in the Belarusian extra league, and played 33 games there.

During the 2009/10 season Freibergs, who had not been selected by any team in the NHL Entry Draft , moved to North America. There he joined the Texas Tornado from the US Junior League North American Hockey League . In the 2010/11 season the Latvian achieved his breakthrough when he finished the season as the best-scoring defender in the league with 55 points in 53 games. He was then appointed to the first All-Star Team of the NAHL and named the best defender in the league.

For the following season Ralfs Freibergs moved to the Lincoln Stars from the United States Hockey League . There he scored 43 points in his debut season, including 35 assists, in 60 games, and was again the best point defender in the league. At the end of the season he was appointed to the USHL's Second All-Star Team. For the 2012/13 season he enrolled at Bowling Green State University in the US state of Ohio , but was initially excluded from playing in the NCAA because he had already played in a professional league in his career. Finally, by the end of the season, he had eight missions in which he scored seven points.

In the 2014/15 season, Freibergs switched between the St. John's IceCaps from the American Hockey League (AHL) and the Ontario Reign from the ECHL , although he was mainly used in the ECHL , which was a lower level. In October 2015, he moved within the league to the Toledo Walleye .

International

Ralfs Freibergs represented Latvia for the first time at the U18 Junior World Championships in Division I in 2008 and 2009 , when he and the team were promoted to the top division. He was also part of the Latvian team at the U20 Junior World Championships in 2009 and 2010 . At the U20 Junior World Championship Division I in 2011 , he led Latvia to promotion to the top division and was named the best defender of the tournament.

For the men's national team, Freibergs was on the ice for the first time at the 2013 World Cup . On January 7, 2014, he was appointed to the squad of the Latvian national ice hockey team for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and was the only NCAA player to take part in the ice hockey tournament. On February 22, 2014, however , a doping test was positive for a dehydrochloromethyltestosterone metabolite and the IOC excluded him from the games.
