Steffen Kent Søberg (born August 6, 1993 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian ice hockey goalkeeper who also has US citizenship. He has been under contract with Vålerenga IF in the Norwegian GET-ligaen since 2012 . His brother Markus Søberg is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Søberg began his career in the youth department of Manglerud Star and went through various ages of the club before making his debut in the second-rate 1st division in the 2009/10 season at the age of 16 , where he played 17 games with the club's second team denied. At the end of the season he was appointed to the first team and played three games in the regular season and four play-offs . In the following season he was able to earn a place in the squad of the first team and came to 27 appearances in the GET league .
In the 2011 NHL Entry Draft , Søberg was selected in the fourth round in 117th position by the Washington Capitals , making it the first Norwegian goalkeeper ever to be drafted by a team from the National Hockey League . He was then selected by the Swift Current Broncos from the Western Hockey League in sixth overall position in the CHL Import Draft . After spending three weeks in training camp with the team, he returned to Norway for personal reasons and played another season for Manglerud Star.
Before the 2012/13 season , the 18-year-old signed a four-year contract with Vålerenga IF and became the club from Oslo's new goalkeeper. He then played 42 missions in the regular season and then led the team to the final of the play-offs, where they were defeated by the Stavanger Oilers . At the end of the season, Søberg was appointed to the GET-ligaen All-Star Team .
International
Steffen Søberg was in the squad of the Norwegian team for the first time at the U18 Junior World Championship in Division I in 2010, but remained unused during the tournament. He played six games at the U18 Junior World Championship in 2011 and was able to achieve the second highest catch quota of the tournament. In the same year he also took part in the U20 World Junior Championship .
At the U20 Junior World Championships 2013 in the second-rate Division 1A, Søberg led the Norwegian team to the top division with tournament best performances with goals against goals and catch quota and was named the best player in the Norwegian selection. He then received his first appointment to the men's national team for the 2013 World Cup , but remained the third goalkeeper without a commitment.
