Xavier Ouellet (born July 29, 1993 in Bayonne ) is a Canadian ice hockey player of French origin who has been under contract with the Canadiens de Montréal from the National Hockey League since July 2018 and at the same time for their farm team, the Rocket de Laval , in American Hockey League is used. His father Robert Ouellet was also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Xavier Ouellet was born in Bayonne in south-west France, where his father Robert Ouellet was active for Anglet Hormadi Élite in the second division 1 at the time. In line with his father's career, Xavier Ouellet spent parts of his youth in France and Germany before the family returned to his father's homeland and settled in Terrebonne in the province of Québec . He finally spent his junior years between 2009 and 2013 in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . There he played for two years for the Club de hockey junior de Montréal and then for the successor team Armada de Blainville-Boisbriand . During the four, the defender was elected to the all-rookie team and twice to the league's first all-star team. In addition, he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2011 in the second round in 48th position by the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League and nine months later in March 2012 by the Red Wings under contract.

For the 2013/14 season Ouellet switched to the professional field and was initially active for Detroit's farm team , the Grand Rapids Griffins , in the American Hockey League . During the season he came to four missions for the Red Wings in the NHL. In the following two game years, the defender was mainly on the ice for the Griffins, but completed a further 26 NHL appearances. In the 2016/17 season , he made the final jump to the Detroit Red Wings squad. In July 2017, Ouellet's contract was extended by two years. As a result, the defender played 45 games for Detroit in the 2017/18 season before management put him on the waiver in accordance with the regulations in June 2018 in order to be able to pay him the last year of his contract. A little later, the defender joined the Canadiens de Montréal as a free agent .

International

Unlike his father, who played internationally for the French national team, Ouellet was on the ice in the junior division for Canada. He represented the country at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2010 , the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2010 , which the team finished with a gold medal, and the U20 World Junior Championship in 2013 .
