List of cities in Finland

The list of cities in Finland provides an overview of the population development in the larger cities and municipalities of the state of Finland . A table of the municipalities with the largest area and an alphabetical overview of the cities are also listed. An alphabetical overview of all municipalities can be found under List of cities and municipalities in Finland .

Municipalities by population

The table shows the municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants, their names in Finnish and Swedish , the population figures according to the results of the census of 1990 and 2000 (December 31, respectively), as well as an estimate by the Central Statistical Office in Finland for 1980, 2006 and 2016 (December 31st each). The province ( Lääni ) to which the municipality belonged until the provinces were abolished on January 1, 2010 is also listed. The population figures refer to the respective municipality within its political limits, without politically independent suburbs. The cities are in bold.

1 On January 1, 2009, the rural municipality of Jyväskylä and the municipality of Korpilahti were incorporated into the city of Jyväskylä, which has become the seventh largest city in Finland with around 130,000 inhabitants.

Municipalities by area

The municipality with the largest area in Finland is Inari with 17,334 square kilometers. It is therefore larger than the German state of Thuringia . The smallest municipality in area, the city of Kauniainen , covers only six square kilometers. The following table lists the largest municipalities in the country with the province ( Lääni ) to which the municipality belonged until the provinces were abolished on January 1, 2010 ( as of January 1, 2007 ). The cities are in bold.

Urban settlements by population

By far the largest metropolitan area in Finland is Helsinki with a population of 1,274,746 (as of December 31, 2005). A quarter of the country's population is thus concentrated in the capital region .

The following table contains the urban settlements (Finnish Taajama , Swedish Tatort ) with more than 20,000 inhabitants with their population according to the results of the censuses of November 1, 1980, December 31, 1990 and December 31, 2000 as well as estimates by the Central Statistical Office in Finland for December 31, 2005 and December 31, 2016. The province ( Lääni ) to which the urban settlement belonged until the provinces were abolished on January 1, 2010 is also listed. The population figures refer to the respective urban settlement - the geographical urban area - not to the city or municipality in the political sense.

Alphabetical overview of the cities

In Finland there are 310 municipalities (finn. Kunta , swedish commun ), of which 107 are towns ( kaupunki , stad ) (as of 2020). The number of cities tripled between 1950 and 2008. The development went as follows: 1950: 35 cities, 1960: 41, 1970: 50, 1980: 84, 1990: 94, 2000: 109 and 2008: 113. The number of all municipalities, however, fell from 547 to 415 in the same period. The following The table contains all cities in the country whose names are in Finnish and Swedish , the province ( lääni , län ) to which the city belonged until the provinces were abolished on January 1, 2010, and the year in which the city charter was granted or the city was created by amalgamation.
