The province of Western Finland ( Finnish: Länsi-Suomen lääni , Swedish Västra Finlands län ) was a province ( lääni ) of Finland from 1997 to 2009 . It included the landscapes ( maakunta ) Varsinais-Suomi , Satakunta , Pirkanmaa , Central Finland , Österbotten , Südosterbotten and Central Ostrobothnia . The area was 81,149 square kilometers, the population was around 1.9 million (2009). The administrative seat was the city of Turku .

The province of Western Finland was created in the administrative reform of 1997 from the previous provinces of Vaasa , Turku-Pori , central Finland and the northern part of the province of Häme . At the beginning of 2010 the provinces were abolished. State administration of the area is now carried out by the regional administrative authorities ( aluehallintovirasto ) of Southwest Finland and West and Inland Finland.

The province of western Finland included the historical landscapes of Varsinais-Suomi, Satakunta, the southern part of Österbotten and the western part of Häme. The coat of arms of the province is composed of the historical coats of arms of the first three. The description reads: The coat of arms is divided and split at the top. At the top in front a gold-crowned, golden spangenhelm en face (facing the viewer), behind which a blue flag with a small, triangular incision on the flight side and with a gold cross on the golden stick flies on each side . At the top in the back of the shield, which is divided by blue and gold, a gold-crowned, red-armored, red-tongued and red-eyed black bear with a gold-hilted silver sword is accompanied in both paws by two silver seven-pointed stars . At the bottom of the shield base in blue there are three (2; 1) white fleeing stoats with black tails. A golden crown rests on the coat of arms .
