Rosemary McKenna CBE (born May 8, 1941 in Renfrewshire ) is a Scottish politician .

Life

McKenna was born in the Renfrewshire area but grew up in Glasgow . She attended St Augustine's Comprehensive School and subsequently worked as a secretary for seven years. McKenna then moved to the Notre Dame College of Education , where she trained as a teacher. She then worked in this profession for twenty years.

McKenna holds the Order of the British Empire with the rank of Commander .

Political career

From 1984 to 1996 McKenna represented the Labor Party on the Cumbernauld city ​​council and served as council president for several years. Within the Labor Party, she was a member of the committee that decides on the list of Labor candidates in the individual constituencies. She is a supporter of British devolution and spoke out clearly in favor of the introduction of the Scottish Parliament . At the political level, she often dealt with the SNP .

After Norman Hogg , who was raised to Baron Hogg of Cumbernauld in the same year , did not run for the 1997 general election, McKenna was chosen as his successor in the constituency of Cumbernauld and Kilsyth . With a share of the vote of 58.7%, she clearly won the mandate and subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . In 1999 McKenna was given a position as Parliamentary Private Secretary in the Foreign Office . In the following general election in 2001 McKenna defended its mandate.

At the end of the electoral term, McKenna's constituency was dissolved as part of constituency reform. In the general election in 2005 , she therefore applied for the mandate of the newly created constituency of Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East , in which large parts of her former constituency were absorbed. McKenna clearly won the mandate. McKenna did not run for the following general election in 2010 . Her successor, Gregg McClymont , held the Labor Party mandate.
