Guy Wilks (born January 22, 1981 in Darlington ) is a British rally driver .
Career
Starts as a private Ford driver
Guy Wilks began his career as a rally driver in 2000 with a Ford Ka and became British Ford Ka Junior Champion. In 2001 he won the British Ford Puma 1400 Championship. At the 2002 Rally Sweden he made his debut in the World Rally Championship with a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI . He then took part in the British rally championship with a Ford Puma S1600 and achieved fifth place in the overall championship and third place in the ranking for vehicles in the Super 1600 class . In the 2003 season he regularly competed in WRC races in his Ford Puma S1600 and finished seventh in the Junior World Rally Championship . His co-driver was Phil Pugh from this season , with whom Wilks formed a permanent team in the following years.
JWRC with Suzuki
When the first successes had set in, the Suzuki factory team noticed Wilks and put him under contract for the 2004 season. He received a Suzuki Ignis S1600 and competed with it for the entire season in the Junior World Championship, which was held as part of the WRC. At the Rally Greece he achieved his first JWRC victory, which was followed by a second win of the season at the Rally Great Britain . He finished the Junior World Championship just beaten in third place. He was also the British rally champion for Super 1600 vehicles with six class wins. In 2005 Wilks achieved a JWRC victory at the Rally Mexico . After the half-time of the season, Suzuki provided him with a new vehicle, the Suzuki Swift S1600 . At the end of the season he took the second championship place in the JWRC. In 2006 Wilks won the JWRC classification of the Rally Argentina and the Rally Finland and finished fourth overall in the Junior World Championship.
British championship titles and WRC guest starts
After the 2006 season, Wilks left Suzuki and switched to the works team of the British Mitsubishi importer. With a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX from Group N , he won five rallies of the British Championship in 2007 and became British Rally Champion. Sponsorship money from Mobil 1 also enabled Wilks to climb up within the WRC to a World Rally Car , a Ford Focus RS WRC 05 from the Ramsport team . With this car he contested individual WRC rallies, but narrowly missed out on the points with two ninth places in Greece and Finland two times. Finally, towards the end of the season, he finished sixth at the Rally Ireland with a privately entered Subaru Impreza S11 WRC and thus scored his first world championship points. He drove the final Rally Great Britain with the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX and achieved the PWRC class victory. In 2008 Wilks won three rallies of the British championship with the Lancer Evo IX and he managed to defend his title. With this vehicle he was used again in the Rally Great Britain in the WRC. He also contested individual rallies this year with a Honda Civic Type R R3 from JAS Motorsport .
Intercontinental Rally Challenge
For the 2009 season, Wilks planned to buy into the Subaru factory team and contest the World Rally Championship with a Subaru Impreza WRC. Since Subaru withdrew from the WRC before the season, this project failed. Wilks then found a place with the newly founded Proton factory team and started in the British rally championship with a Proton Satria Neo S2000 . From the fifth round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge 2009, the Belgium Ypres Rally , Wilks competed in the Proton in the IRC. However, due to differences of opinion, he separated from the Proton factory team before the season finale of the IRC, the Rally Scotland . Instead, he competed in a Škoda Fabia S2000 from Škoda UK . As Kris Meeke , the fastest driver in the rally, was subsequently disqualified, Wilks moved up to first place and won his first IRC rally. At the end of the season he finished seventh in the drivers' championship.
In 2010 Wilks was hired by Skoda UK for the entire season of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge. He started the season successfully with three podium finishes from the first four rallies. However, his chances of winning the title were negated by a serious accident at the Rally Sardinia in which he fractured his vertebrae. Wilks therefore had to pause at three rallies and only returned to the IRC for the ninth round of the season. At the end of the season, he finished sixth in the championship.
Before the 2011 season , Wilks accepted an offer from Peugeot UK , as he can also participate in the development work at Peugeot. Since then he has competed in a Peugeot 207 S2000 prepared by Kronos Racing . He started the season with third place in the 2011 Monte Carlo Rally .
