Gopinath Bordoloi (born June 6, 1890 in Raha , Nagaon , Assam , † August 6, 1950 in Guwahati , Assam) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress and a leading independence fighter. He was head of government in Assam in 1938/39 and from 1946 until his death in 1950 and the first chief minister of that state.

During the partition of India, Bordoloi was directed against efforts to integrate the Hindu- dominated, still undivided Assam into the Islam- dominated East Pakistan (today Bangladesh ). Among other things, he organized protests. Only Sylhet was finally incorporated into East Pakistan after a referendum on July 6, 1947.

After Indian independence, Bordoloi worked closely with Vallabhbhai Patel to protect Assam from communist China and East Pakistan. He also organized the return of millions of refugees who fled East Pakistan because of unrest. His efforts led to stability and security in Assam.

Posthumously in 1999 he was awarded the highest Indian state prize, the Bharat Ratna . The airport in Guwahati bears his name.
