Johann Poppel

Johann Gabriel Friedrich Poppel (born May 14, 1807 in the industrial village of Hammer near Nuremberg , † August 6, 1882 in Ammerland ) was a German copper and steel engraver , architectural draftsman , landscape painter and publisher .

Life

Johann Poppel first learned copperplate engraving from Johann Martin Friedrich Geißler at the Nuremberg Art School . On this basis, he learned in 1829 the steel stinging with Professor Carl Ludwig Frommel in Karlsruhe that there is a studio operation for steel engraver. And like Frommel before, Poppel also traveled to London : in 1832 William Tombleson's travelogue Views of the Rhine appeared there ... with steel engravings subtitled in English, French and German based on Tombleson's own drawings. The announced place of issue was, besides London and Paris , Karlsruhe.

In 1833 Poppel worked again in Karlsruhe. In the same year he married Sophie Franziska Albrecht in Nuremberg, who gave birth to her son Christian Gustav Friedrich there in 1834.

In 1838 Poppel and his family moved permanently to Munich and only temporarily to England again in 1841 . In 1845 he won Georg Michael Kurz as an employee for his well-known “Gallery of European Cities” , who later became his business partner as a publisher.

In the beginning, Johann Poppel was primarily interested in drawings that he had made on site. Despite his travels to England, however, he probably never saw most of his local views himself. The additional print “signed (eichnet) v. (On)…” or “based on a drawing by…” often did not mean unique items by other artists, but rather engraved reproductions of lithographic templates from places Poppel never visited. Those templates are likely to have been obtained from the descriptive book authors with whom Poppel corresponded. The draftsmen included u. a. Ludwig Rohbock .

The illustrated books were occasionally created as a co-production "with Germany's most famous steel engravers" (subtitle "Der Rhein ...") or "in association with the most distinguished steel engravers of our time" (subtitled "Kingdom of Prussia ..."). In addition to Georg Michael Kurz, Franz Abresch and Ed. Willmann .

Poppel taught his own students according to the General German Biography, including Jobst Riegel. Joseph Maximilian Kolb was an employee of his studio .
