Caetano de Lemos Telo de Meneses

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Caetano de Lemos Telo de Meneses (born August 6, 1739 in Naroá , Goa , † November 20, 1795 in Mozambique ) was the second Portuguese governor of Portuguese Timor to reside in Dili between 1776 and 1779 .

Service in Portuguese Timor

Meneses is accused of causing a fire through criminal negligence that destroyed the archive in Dili, which is why there are relatively few records of Portuguese colonial history on Timor before this time. He also expropriated two Timorese and one Portuguese who had rebelled against him. The higher colonial government in Goa saw this punitive measure as arbitrary. On April 25, 1778, Meneses' exile to Mozambique was ordered. He was then replaced on June 15 by Laurenço de Brito Correira (1779 to 1782) as governor. Meneses died in Mozambique in 1795. Meneses may also have come into conflict with the Church, because as early as 1777 the Bishop of Macau had complained in a letter about the governor's scandalous behavior.

family

Meneses was a nobleman from the royal family ( Fidalgo da Casa Real ). Meneses' father was Bernardo Aleixo de Lemos , his mother Maria Ana da Silva Telo de Menezes . Meneses was married to Penha da França and Ana Maria Alves da Costa . Her son's name was Bernardo António de Lemos Telo de Menezes .

Bernardo Aleixo de Lemos e Faria , the half-brother of Meneses, was governor of Macau from 1783 to 1788 .
