Antonio José Teles de Meneses

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

António José Teles de Meneses was a Portuguese colonial administrator. Teles de Meneses was governor of Macau from August 30, 1747 to August 2, 1749 . From 1768 to 1776 he was captain general and governor of Portuguese Timor and Solor .

Since 1719 the Portuguese had to fight back against the Cailaco rebellion on Timor . Timorese and Topasse fought against the colonial power in alternating alliances. Dionísio Gonçalves Rebelo Galvão , the predecessor of Teles de Meneses, was poisoned on November 28, 1765 by leaders of the Topasse, who held the real power in the Portuguese possessions of the region. The Dominicans António de Boaventura and José Rodrigues Pereira then took over the administration of the colony until Teles de Meneses arrived as the new governor.

Teles de Meneses was forced to ask his compatriots in Macau for rice deliveries in 1769 due to the poor supply situation in the besieged colony , but the ship did not reach Lifau . The connections to the inland were interrupted by the Topasse and local Timorese. On the night of August 11, 1769, Meneses gave up Lifau and moved the capital of the colony to Dili . On October 10 of the same year, the expansion of Dilis into the new capital began.
