life and work

After training as a painter , serving as a soldier in the Wehrmacht and as a prisoner of war, Werner worked, among other things, as a worker at the Simson factory in Suhl and as a press officer and culture association secretary in the Meiningen district . From 1956 to 1959 he studied at the Johannes R. Becher Institute for Literature in Leipzig. He then lived as a freelance writer in Untermaßfeld until his death in 1995.

Werner was one of the most prominent natural lyricists in the GDR . His poems are mainly dedicated to the landscape of Thuringia , especially the Rhön . As a convinced, but not fanatical socialist , he was involved in building a GDR culture and especially in promoting young literary talents, e. B. as a leader of “ circles of writing workers ”.
