Norbert Straumann
Norbert Straumann (born August 6, 1936 in Niedererlinsbach ) is a Swiss physicist .
He attended public schools and studied physics and mathematics at the ETH in Zurich. His teachers included Heinz Hopf , Res Jost , Wolfgang Pauli , Paul Scherrer , Eduard Stiefel , Walter Heitler , Rolf Nevanlinna and Bartel Leendert van der Waerden .
In his diploma thesis in 1959, Norbert Straumann dealt with the characterization of generalized free fields in axiomatic field theory under the direction of Res Jost . In 1961 he received his doctorate from Walter Heitler with a thesis on mesons and hyperon mass differences in a non-local field theory. In the following years Norbert Straumann was a research assistant for Walter Heitler.
In 1964 and 1965 he was a fellow at CERN in Geneva , after which he became an assistant professor at the University of Zurich . From 1967 to 1968 he was an Associate Professor at Duke University in North Carolina . At that time he was concerned with the mass differences in bosons and the current algebra , a forerunner of the modern theory of strong interaction .
In 1969 he began to set up a theory group for what was then the Swiss Institute for Nuclear Research (now the Paul Scherrer Institute ). In the 1970s, his field of activity changed and he began to deal with the theory of gravity . He paid great attention to the historical aspects of gravity.
In 1969 Straumann became a full professor at the University of Zurich. From 1980 to 1987 he was a member of the Science Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation . 1985–1986 he was visiting professor at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Bern . In 1988 he was visiting professor in Amsterdam. From 1997 to 2000 he was an advisory board member of the Albert Einstein Institute of the Max Planck Society in Potsdam . In 2001 Norbert Straumann retired and since then has written further papers on the theory of gravitation and on topics in the history of physics.
Norbert Straumann wrote lecture notes (partly in book form) on the classical areas of theoretical physics ( mechanics , electrodynamics , thermodynamics and kinetic gas theory , statistical mechanics , special relativity , general relativity and astrophysics , cosmology and black holes ), some of which were published in book form Have shaped students and researchers at the University of Zurich.
In 2005 Norbert Straumann received the title of Doctor Philosophiae honoris causa from the University of Bern .
