Michail Prodan (born October 22, 1912 in Chernivtsi (Romanian Cernăuți); † August 6, 2002 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a Romanian - Austrian - German forest scientist . He is the founder of the field of forest biometrics in the German-speaking area. In 1966 he founded the department for forest biometrics at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg . He was head of this department until his retirement in 1978.

Life

His professional career began in Romania with a degree in forestry . After moving to Germany , he received his doctorate in 1944 with a dissertation on growth and yield studies in the Plenterwald at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg. The habilitation followed in 1947 with the topic The mathematical - statistical methods in forestry .

He was the author of publications and books on the subjects of forest biometrics and wood metrology . His work, Forest Biometry , published in 1961, and the book Holzmesslehre , published in 1965, are still standard works for forest science students and forestry practitioners. The latter was published in 1997 in Spanish translation. Later he turned increasingly to the evaluation of forest and landscape effects on the environment and interdisciplinary ecological issues.

His scientific achievements were recognized, among other things, by being awarded an honorary doctorate from the Georg-August University of Göttingen in 1968 and the award for the recognition and promotion of outstanding achievements in the field of forest biometrics. He was an honorary member of the Forest Science Society of Finland , winner of the gold medal for outstanding merits in the field of forest science research of the Brno University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences and a corresponding member of the Italian Academy of Forest Sciences in Florence. In 1984 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1993 he received the Georg Ludwig Hartig Prize . In 1994 he received the certificate of honor from the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Freiburg on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his doctorate.
