The Mendel University Brno (Czech: Mendelova univerzita v Brně , short: MENDELU ) is a university in Brno , which was founded in 1919 as the University of Agriculture . From January 1, 1995 to December 31, 2009 it was known as the Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry Brno (Czech: Mendelova zemědělská a lesnická univerzita v Brně , short: MLZU ).
The name of the university can be traced back to the Silesian Augustinian monk and naturalist Gregor Mendel .
At the moment, more than 8,000 students are studying at the university with four faculties in 25 Bachelor courses, 12 courses with 27 subsequent Master’s courses, 13 courses with 17 five-year master’s courses and 19 courses with postgraduate courses. Degree programs are also offered in English.
The botanical garden founded in 1926 and the arboretum , the approx. 10,000 hectare “Masaryk Forest” in Křtiny with a sawmill in Olomučany and the agricultural enterprise founded in 1925 in Žabčice are affiliated .
