Ji Xianlin (Chinese: 季羡林; born August 6, 1911 in Linqing ; † July 11, 2009 in Beijing ) was a Chinese linguist , palaeographer , Indologist and historian .

Life

Ji Xianlin began studying Western literature at Tsinghua University in 1930 , where he first came into contact with Sanskrit . From 1935 to 1945 he studied Sanskrit and Tocharian at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen with Ernst Waldschmidt and Emil Sieg , and he also attended lectures in other humanities . He received his doctorate in Sanskrit as a major in 1941 at the University of Göttingen.

After his study and research in Germany , he returned to China, where he worked in Beijing , a professor at Peking University was awarded. There he built up the faculty for Asian linguistics. In 1956, he was appointed head of the South Asia Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Ji Xianlin is considered one of the most important Indologists in China and was awarded the Padma Bhushan Prize by the Indian government for his work in 2008 .
