Albrecht von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg (* May 24, 1648 in Gotha ; † August 6, 1699 in Coburg ) had been Duke of Saxe-Coburg since 1680 .

Life

Albrecht was the second of the seven sons of Duke Ernst I of Saxe-Gotha (1601–1675) from his marriage to Elisabeth Sophia (1619–1680), the only daughter of Duke Johann Philipp of Saxe-Altenburg . The prince was carefully educated , among others by the court master Joachim Bartholomäus Meyer , and together with his brother Bernhard attended the University of Tübingen from 1666 in order to later continue his studies in Geneva . His grand tour took Albrecht and his brother Henry to Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands.

After the common court holding with his brothers at Schloss Friedenstein in Gotha was given up, Albrecht made Saalfeld his residence after his wedding and from 1676 built a castle there on the site of a former Benedictine monastery.

After the final division of the estate in 1680, Albrecht became Duke of Saxe-Coburg , while Saalfeld fell to his youngest brother Johann Ernst . In this division of the estate, Albrecht received the office and city of Coburg, the court Rodach, the office and city of Neustadt , the court and city of Sonneberg , Mönchröden monastery , the Sonnefeld office and the Neuhaus administration . Albrecht resided in Coburg's Ehrenburg Palace , which he had rebuilt as a baroque palace after a fire in 1690 . In the previous year Albrecht was involved in the conquest of the French-occupied city of Mainz and the Bonn fortress . After the death of his older brother Friedrich I of Saxe-Gotha in 1691, Albrecht was given the office of Oldisleben as a senior in the Ernestine house .

Albrecht was considered musically gifted and his first wife, the daughter of the founder of the famous library, had a significant influence on him. A dispute broke out among his brothers and / or their descendants about Albrecht's successor, which Albrecht's youngest brother Johann Ernst was ultimately able to decide for himself as far as possible.

Marriages

Albrecht married on July 18, 1676 in Gotha Marie Elisabeth (1638–1687), daughter of Duke August von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel and widow of Duke Adolf Wilhelm von Sachsen-Eisenach . With her he had his only child:

  • Ernst August (1677–1678)

Albrecht concluded his second marriage on May 24, 1688 in Coburg with Susanne Elisabeth (1643–1717), daughter of Nikolaus Kempinski, Baron of Schwisiz and Altenhofen zu Limberg. Susanne Elisabeth was raised to the rank of imperial prince by Emperor Leopold in 1689 .
