Joachim Bartholomäus Meyer (also Joachim Barthel Meyer ; * 1624 in Nordhausen , † April 18, 1701 in Gotha ) was a German librarian and hymn poet .

Life

Meyer attended the Gotha high school . Even in his school days he was entrusted with looking after the children of the court in Gotha. In 1644 he was enrolled at the University of Jena for the summer semester and got his place at university for free. After his studies he was employed by Duke Ernst the Pious as court master for Princes Friedrich and Albrecht . He stayed in his position until Albrecht went to the University of Tübingen with his brother Bernhard .

Following his work as a private tutor, Meyer received the position of librarian at the Gotha Court Library in 1665 , which he took over from Samuel Reyher , who had followed a call to Kiel University . He arranged the library according to the rules of Veit Ludwig von Seckendorff . He also began to work on a catalog for the Gotha collection.

Meyer worked as a poet in addition to his work at court . From 1700 he asked to get his son employed as an assistant, as his strength increasingly waned. The court gave negative decisions several times, but allowed him to work on the catalog. After his death, his son Johann Philip Meyer († 1746) became his successor.
