Georg Mentz

Georg Mentz (born March 31, 1870 in Apolda ; † June 26, 1943 in Jena ) was a German modern historian.

life and work

Mentz was the son of the mayor of Apolda. He studied history in Jena and received his doctorate in 1892 under Ottokar Lorenz . In 1896 he completed his habilitation and in 1901 he became a non-civil servant professor and in 1910 a civil servant associate professor in Jena. In 1923 he became a full professor.

He dealt with German history in the 16th and 17th centuries and Thuringian regional history (Duchy of Weimar, biography of Johann Friedrich I (Saxony) ). He was also known for his handbook on German history in the age of the Reformation, the Counter-Reformation and the Thirty Years' War, published in 1913.

From 1931 to 1940 he headed the Association for Thuringian History and Archeology , was the editor of its magazine until 1939 and in 1937 he became an honorary member of the newly founded Thuringian Historical Commission .

Politically, he was close to Friedrich Naumann and had been a member of the DDP since 1918 . He was active in the Association for Germanness Abroad (VDA) , of which he had been a member since 1897 and of which he headed the Thuringian regional association from 1907 to 1933. In a congratulatory address on his 70th birthday, he was described as an "old champion of German abroad".
