Elisabeth Sophia von Sachsen-Altenburg (born October 10, 1619 in Halle (Saale) , † December 20, 1680 in Gotha ) was a princess of Sachsen-Altenburg from the house of the Ernestine Wettins and by marriage Duchess of Saxe-Gotha .

Life

Elisabeth Sophia was the only child of Duke Johann Philipp von Sachsen-Altenburg (1597–1639) from his marriage to Elisabeth (1593–1650), daughter of Duke Heinrich Julius von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel . Elisabeth Sophia married Ernst the Pious in Altenburg on October 24, 1636 , who became Duke of Saxe-Gotha in 1640. Elisabeth Sophia received 20,000 guilders as marriage property, upon which the Roßla office was pledged as security . The offices of Kapellendorf and Berka as well as the so-called garden house in Weimar were designated as Wittum .

Since the current law in Saxony-Altenburg did not provide for female succession to the throne, after the death of her father in 1639 his brother, i.e. her uncle, Friedrich Wilhelm II, became the ruling Duke of Saxony-Altenburg. He died in 1669 and was followed by his underage son Friedrich Wilhelm III. who, however, also died in 1672 at the age of only 15. With the death of Friedrich Wilhelm III. the older line of the house of Sachsen-Altenburg was extinct in the male line, Elisabeth Sophia was the main heiress of the state.

Her husband Ernst the Pious asserted hereditary claims for two reasons: on the one hand, as an Ernestine Wettin, he was related to the ducal house, on the other hand, he insisted on his wife's claims. Saxe-Weimar also made claims and as a result Saxe-Altenburg was divided, with the lion's share including the residential city of Altenburg falling to Saxe-Gotha . This established the new Ernestine line between Saxony-Gotha and Altenburg , which was to exist until 1825.

Elisabeth Sophia survived her husband for five years and received the offices of Reinhardsbrunn and Tenneberg as a result of a change in the Wittumsschrift from 1640 . Elisabeth Sophia was a member of the Tugendliche Gesellschaft under the name of “ the Chaste ” .
