Sophie Marie von Hessen-Darmstadt (* May 7, 1661 in Darmstadt ; † August 22, 1712 in Gotha ) was after her marriage to Duke Christian Duchess of Saxe-Eisenberg .

Life

Sophie Marie was a daughter of Landgrave Ludwig VI. von Hessen-Darmstadt (1630–1678) from his marriage to Maria Elisabeth (1634–1665), daughter of Duke Friedrich III. from Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf .

On February 9, 1681, she married Duke Christian von Sachsen-Eisenberg in Darmstadt , who at that time was already a widower and father of a daughter. In the previous year he had become the first Duke of Saxony-Eisenberg through a division of the country with his brothers. The marriage remained childless and Christian died without leaving an heir. A long-term inheritance dispute broke out among his remaining brothers and their descendants around Sachsen-Eisenberg.

The Duchess has been described as a very hardworking housewife with a particular fondness for spinning. Disguised as a simple woman, she took care of the supply of wool and yarn from local clothing makers.
