Vamos ( Greek Βάμος ( m. Sg. )) Is a village with (2011) 706 inhabitants in western Crete . It is located about 26 km southeast of Chania .

Until 2010 Vamos was also an independent municipality, since 1997 after some incorporations as a municipality (dimos), which accommodated around 3000 inhabitants. On January 1st, Vamos was absorbed into the Apokoronas parish , in which it has since formed one of six parishes.

Vamos was founded in the 12th century. In 1896 it was the scene of a revolt against the then rule of the Turks in Crete. Starting in 1995, some of the approximately 650 inhabitants began to renovate the city with the help of EU funds in order to maintain the traditional way of life and appearance of the city. For this purpose, some of the old stone houses were restored and converted into guest houses.

In Vamos there is a medical center (Health Center Vamos), which provides medical care for the surrounding villages. Vamos was from 1867 to 1913 the capital of Sandzak İsfakiye (Sfakia), and in the Kaza Apokoron, known as Apokoronas to 1997 a Greek province was formed.

The municipal district of Vamos includes the places Douliana , Gavalochori , Agios Pavlos , Koprana , Agios Vasilios , Plaka , Almirida , Kambia , Kokkino Chorio , Kaina , Kefalas , Paleloni , Drapanos , Xerosterni , Litsarda , Sellia , Souri , Likotinara and Kalamitsi .

To the south of the village of Vamos are the ruins of the Karidi monastery with the church of Ag. Georgios. The complex was originally a Venetian settlement that was destroyed during the Ottoman rule. Until the beginning of the 19th century, the monastery and its lands belonged to the monastery of Ag as an estate. Triada on Akrotiri .
