Marie Elisabeth of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf (born June 6, 1634 in Gottorf ; † June 17, 1665 Darmstadt ) was Landgravine of Hesse-Darmstadt by marriage .

Life

Marie Elisabeth was a daughter of Duke Friedrich III. von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf (1597–1659) from his marriage to Maria Elisabeth (1610–1684), daughter of Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony .

She married the future Landgrave Ludwig VI on November 24, 1650 in Gottorf Castle . von Hessen-Darmstadt (1630–1678), to whom she got engaged on his birthday in 1649. On the occasion of the wedding, the last sword dance in Hesse was performed at a folk festival in Lollar .

Ludwig was included in the affairs of government by his father in the year after the wedding in 1651 and succeeded him in 1661. Through Marie Elisabeth's sister Hedwig Eleonore , Queen of Sweden, Ludwig established extensive political ties to this kingdom. Marie Elisabeth died four years later in "Kindsnöthen", having already given birth to eight children. Her death plunged Ludwig into deep mourning. The prince, who was active as a writer, wrote some poems in memory of his wife.
