Marie Hedwig of Hessen-Darmstadt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marie Hedwig von Hessen-Darmstadt (born November 26, 1647 in Gießen , † April 19, 1680 in Ichtershausen ) was Countess of Hessen-Darmstadt and by marriage Duchess of Saxony-Meiningen .

Life

Marie Hedwig was the youngest daughter of Landgrave Georg II of Hesse-Darmstadt (1605–1661) from his marriage to Sophie Eleonore (1609–1671), daughter of Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony .

The princess married on November 20, 1671 in Gotha Bernhard , later Duke of Saxe-Meiningen, who at that time still ruled over Saxe-Gotha together with his brothers and resided in Ichtershausen from 1676. Here he built a castle, which was named Marienburg in honor of his wife.

In 1680 Bernhard divided the country with his brothers and he became the first Duke of Saxe-Meiningen. The largest part of his newly formed land was formed by the former princes of Henneberg , whose coat of arms depicted a black hen. This symbol was associated with witchcraft and magic at the time. Marie Hedwig remarked very definitely, shortly before the residence was moved from Ichtershausen to Meiningen , that she would never enter the land of the black hen. She only died at the age of 32, shortly after the birth of her last child, nine weeks before the farm moved. Her body was transferred to Meiningen and buried there in the crypt of the city church .

The "Hessensaal" in Elisabethenburg Palace

In Meiningen Schloss Elisabethenburg , Bernhard had the baroque so-called Hessensaal built in memory of his first wife, which was to be furnished with portraits to honor both dynasties.
