Friedrich Wilhelm (Saxony-Meiningen)
Friedrich Wilhelm von Sachsen-Meiningen (born February 16, 1679 in Ichtershausen , † March 10, 1746 in Meiningen ) was Duke of Sachsen-Meiningen from 1743 until his death and came from the Ernestine Wettins .
Life
Friedrich Wilhelm was a son of Duke Bernhard I of Saxony-Meiningen and his first wife Marie Hedwig of Hesse-Darmstadt (1647–1680). Because of the lack of primogeniture in the country, he was entitled to co-rule in the country after the death of his father in 1706.
Described as not very talented and completely dependent, he renounced all claims to rule in 1707 and again in 1717 towards his older brother Ernst Ludwig I, who was striving for sole rule.
After the death of his older brother in 1724, he was appointed guardian of his nephews Ernst Ludwig II and Karl Friedrich together with Duke Friedrich II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg . Friedrich Wilhelm made himself completely dependent on the Duke of Gotha and granted him considerable government influence. In addition, Friedrich Wilhelm's younger half-brother Anton Ulrich litigated for inclusion in the government of Saxony-Meiningen.
After the death of his nephew Karl Friedrich in 1743, Friedrich Wilhelm became Duke of Saxony-Meiningen. Since with Karl Friedrich's death the regulation of the primogeniture order became obsolete again, Friedrich Wilhelm ruled together with his half-brother Anton Ulrich. After the childless death of Friedrich Wilhelm, Anton Ulrich ruled alone from 1746. The confused domestic and foreign political conditions had a very negative effect on the country.
