Duke Ernst Ludwig II of Saxe-Meiningen

Life

Ernst Ludwig II was a son of Duke Ernst Ludwig I of Saxe-Meiningen and his wife Princess Dorothea Maria of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg . After the death of his older brother Joseph Bernhard on March 22, 1724, he became Hereditary Prince and succeeded his father as Duke of Saxony-Meiningen on November 24, 1724.

Ernst Ludwig's father had introduced the right of birthright for himself and his descendants in the country and appointed his brother Friedrich Wilhelm and Duke Friedrich II of Gotha as guardians for his firstborn . In doing so, he had knowingly passed over his half-brother Anton Ulrich and provoked renewed disputes in the royal family. Anton Ulrich litigated against this regulation.

Ernst Ludwig II died in 1729 a year before he came of age. His younger brother Karl Friedrich was his successor as Duke of Saxe-Meiningen .
