Dorothea Marie of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (born January 22, 1674 in Gotha ; † April 18, 1713 in Meiningen ) was a princess of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and by marriage Duchess of Saxe-Meiningen .

Life

Dorothea Marie was a daughter of Duke Friedrich I of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (1646–1691) from his marriage to Magdalena Sibylle (1648–1681), daughter of Duke August of Saxe-Weissenfels . The princess was very carefully trained and received instruction in religion, science, languages and music.

On September 19, 1704, she married her cousin, the later Duke Ernst Ludwig I of Saxony-Meiningen (1672–1724), in Friedenstein Castle , to whom she had become engaged in May of that year. A commemorative coin was minted on the occasion of the wedding. Dorothea Marie received the castle Lauterburg near Rödental , where Ernst Ludwig had the Ludwigsburg hunting lodge built in 1706.

The marriage was described as happy, and the Duchess shared his passion for music and poetry with her husband. Dorothea Marie suffered from "flow in the face" and therefore lived mostly in the country; especially near Bad Liebenstein in Frauenbreitungen and Drei 30acker . Dorothea Marie was active in charities and mainly supported the Meiningen orphanage.

Ernst Ludwig planned to build a pleasure palace in Drei 30, which he wanted to name in honor of his wife Dorotheenburg, but the Duchess died in 1713, which prevented this plan.

Dorothea Marie was buried in the crypt of the castle church in Meiningen. In memory of her death, a coin was minted and an “honorary memory” was printed.
