Life

Johann came from a bourgeois family who achieved reputation and wealth in the 14th century and was counted as a knight. His father Konrad Ribi was mayor of Lenzburg .

In his early years he entered the Habsburg service and soon received a church loan in Blotzheim in Upper Alsace , to which his later additional name of Platzheim can be traced back. He also had a canonical office in Zofingen in the Diocese of Constance . In 1352 he became a notary and a year later he became the chancellor of Duke Albrecht II. After Rudolf IV took office in 1358, he was appointed head of the chancellery, which he kept until the end of his life. In this position he acted as a consultant several times between Rudolf, Charles IV. , The Patriarch of Aquileia and King Ludwig I of Hungary.

After he failed in the candidacy for a bishopric in Freising , Pope Innocent VI appointed him . on October 16, 1359 as Bishop of Gurk. From 1363 to 1365 he was governor of Carinthia.

Since Archduke Rudolf Johann was unable to enforce the election of Bishop of Passau , he forced his election as Bishop of Brixen in December 1363 , which was confirmed by Pope Urban V on February 14, 1364.

His tomb is in the vestibule of the Brixen Cathedral .
