Ekkehard (Gurk)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ekkehard (* before 1170 probably in Carinthia ; † April 23, 1200 ) was Bishop of Gurk .

Ekkehard probably comes from Carinthia and he became provost in Maria Saal . He was a participant in the Provincial Synod of 1187 in Leibnitz. The document that founded the first hospital in Carinthia and thus today's city of Spittal an der Drau comes from him .

1195 he was by the Archbishop of Salzburg Adalbert III. elected bishop of Gurk without involvement of the cathedral chapter. At this point in time he was probably already of an advanced age. In the same year he witnessed the peace agreement between Pope Alexander III. and Emperor Friedrich I. in Venice.

Bishop Ekkehard is likely to have stayed mainly in his diocese, maintained a good relationship with his cathedral chapter and tried to secure the economic basis of his diocese. In the year 1200, probably in anticipation of his imminent death, he donated the high altar in his Gurk cathedral. He died on April 23 of the same year. His grave is unknown.
