Ulschalk

Ulschalk , also Udelscalc or Udalschalk († May 22, 1231 ) was bishop of Gurk .

Ulschalk was elected bishop of Gurk in 1217, before he had been canon in Gurk and was already of advanced age. He took on an overwhelming debt burden from his predecessor, Heinrich II von Pettau . A large part of the episcopal income was used to pay off the debts of the creditors. In 1218 the Archbishop of Salzburg, Eberhard II , founded his own diocese in Seckau , but the Bishop of Gurk was allowed to exercise the rights of vicar general in this part of the archbishopric .

Because of his age-related complaints, but above all because of his poor eyesight, which made him incapable of exercising his office, Bishop Ulschalk looked in Rome in 1220 with Pope Honorius III. for his release, which was granted on December 4, 1220. Bishop Ulschalk survived his abdication for eleven years and died on May 22, 1231. His final resting place is unknown.
