Günther von Krappfeld
Günther von Krappfeld († June 16, 1090 ) was the first bishop of Gurk .
Günther von Krappfeld was born in Carinthia and came from the noble von Krappfeld family. That Heimo von Krappfeld who had the church of St. Martin on the Krappfeld built - originally a wooden structure - was probably his father.
Günther von Krappfeld was the Salzburg Archbishop Gebhard the first bishop of Gurk ordained . The allocation of a separate diocese was provided for in the privilege of King Henry IV , but Archbishop Gebhard never did this, although he was expressly warned to do so by Pope Gregory VII . Gebhard feared that this would make the Gurk bishop too powerful. It was not until his second successor, Hiltebold , that his own diocese was allocated in 1131. However, since this already took place de jure by papal decision in 1072, Bishop Günther and his successor are already referred to as "Bishop of Gurk" and not "in Gurk".
On September 29, 1074, he took part as bishop at the inauguration of Admont Abbey . He had the noble von Krappfeld's own church, which he inherited, rebuilt in stone and consecrated it on July 4, 1075.
Bishop Günther ruled for 18 years and survived Archbishop Gebhard, from whose hand he was consecrated, by exactly two years. Bishop Günther was allegedly buried in the Gurk Cathedral built by his third successor. However, the burial place cannot be proven.
