Johann von Ennsthal (also Ensital , Enstall ; † July 22, 1281 in Rome ) was 1274–1279 Bishop of Chiemsee and 1279–1281 as Johann I Bishop of Gurk .

Life

Johann von Ennsthal came from a Styrian noble family and was the brother of Bishop Gerhart von Lavant and a member of an order.

After the death of the Chiemsee bishop Heinrich von Lützelburg in 1274 he was appointed as his successor by the Salzburg archbishop Berthold von Leiningen . In this function he was a participant in the Provincial Synod in Salzburg in 1274. As a supporter of King Rudolf von Habsburg , he witnessed the peace agreement between Rudolf and the Bohemian King Ottokar II Přemysl in 1276 .

On January 13, 1279 he was transferred by Archbishop Berthold von Leiningen to the bishopric in Gurk. The confirmation by Pope Nicholas III. took place on May 25, 1279. In 1281 he was appointed court chancellor and imperial governor of Tuscany by King Rudolf . A little later Rudolf entrusted him with the honorable task of handing over his daughter Clementia to King Charles of Sicily for his grandson Karl. He traveled ahead of the bride to Italy and met Pope Martin IV in Orvieto on May 24, 1281 . Two months later Johann von Ennsthal died in Rome. His final resting place is unknown.
