Engelmar Chrel (* in the 14th century ; † December 21, 1422 ) was official and vicar general of the Archdiocese of Salzburg from 1398-1399 and Bishop of Chiemsee from 1399-1422 .

Life

Engelmar came from the knight family of Chrel, who gained importance in Eastern Styria as followers of the Lords of Stubenberg and have been documented as Burgraves of Kapfenberg since 1260 . Engelmar studied law at the universities of Bologna , Prague (1383) and Vienna (1384/85) and then stayed for some time at the Roman Curia . There he successfully litigated for a canonical in Salzburg, where he was promoted to canon , scholaster and in 1396 to dean . As such, in 1396 he brought to the Pope the request of Salzburg Archbishop Gregor Schenk von Osterwitz for the award of the pallium . Since there were doubts about the legality of his election as dean, he was in 1397 by Pope Boniface IX. Provided again and at the same time obliged to give up the office of cathedral scholaster. For the years 1398 and 1399 he is recorded as official and vicar general of the Salzburg archbishop.

1398 appointed Pope Boniface IX. Engelmar Chrel as coadjutor of the aged Chiemsee Bishop Eckart von Pernegg . After Eckart's death in October 1399, Archbishop Gregor Schenk von Osterwitz chose him as his successor on December 22, 1399. The papal confirmation took place on February 1, 1400 at the same time as the renewed award of the diocese. As early as January 25, 1400, the archbishop ordained him as a bishop .

In 1403 Engelmar was appointed his chancellor by Archbishop Gregor Schenk von Osterwitz and shortly afterwards suspected of having poisoned the archbishop along with other like-minded people. After a papal investigation, the suspicion was refuted, and a statement by the dying archbishop was also taken into account.

After the archbishop's death, Salzburg knights and nobles founded the so-called Igelbund on May 20, 1403 , the aim of which was to oblige the future archbishop in his capacity as sovereign to take their complaints seriously. In addition to the cities of Salzburg , Laufen , Tittmoning , Hallein and Radstadt , Engelmar Chrel also joined the Igelbund. After the election of Archbishop Eberhard III. von Neuhaus did not suffer any disadvantages from belonging to the Hedgehog Association.

In 1409 Engelmar Chrel was represented at the Council of Pisa by the Salzburg vicar general and official Friedrich Deys . At the Council of Constance he personally participated, and was there in 1417 nor in the election of Pope Martin V in attendance. From this he obtained two indulgences for the Marienkapelle of the Salzburg Chiemseehof and for the parish of Stuhlfelden .

Like his predecessors, Engelmar Chrel was auxiliary bishop in Salzburg and as such performed several official acts outside of his diocese. He also received several papal commissions and the Roman auditor Capus della Torre . In 1418 he took part in the Salzburg Provincial Synod. A year later he organized the first verifiable Chiemsee diocesan synod in Kitzbühel . From July to September 1422 he took part in the Reichstag in Nuremberg as the representative of his archbishop .
