Life

Christoph Mendel von Steinfels came from a family in the Upper Palatinate who also named themselves von Steinfels after their ancestral seat and was ennobled by Emperor Friedrich in 1454 . Christoph's father Erhard Mendel von Steinfels was a landlord on the country estate of the same name . Christoph, whose dates of birth are not known, studied at the University of Leipzig since 1463 . On July 25, 1472 he was elected the first rector of the newly founded University of Ingolstadt and in 1476 re-elected rector as a full professor of the law faculty. The first university register shows him and the Bavarian Duke Ludwig the Rich kneeling in front of a Madonna.

In 1495 Christoph Mendel von Steinfels became Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Salzburg , where he founded a mining company in 1501 that exported precious metals extracted from Gastein and Rauris to Venice.

After the death of the Chiemsee bishop Ludwig Ebmer , the Salzburg archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach appointed Christoph Mendel von Steinfels as his successor on August 5, 1502. The papal confirmation took place on October 18, 1502, the episcopal ordination only on July 16, 1503. He kept the office of Salzburg Chancellor.

During his tenure he led several lawsuits about his episcopal rights and other disputes. After he excommunicated a clergyman working in St. Johann in Tirol , there was a dispute with the provost of Herrenchiemsee . The dispute was brought to the Rota Romana and decided in favor of the provost.

Christoph Mendel von Steinfels died on May 4th 1508. His body was buried in Salzburg Cathedral .
