Franz Vigil von Spaur und Valör (also Franz Vigil Reichsfreiherr ( Reichsgraf since 1637 ) von Spaur und Valör ; born January 6, 1609 at Spaur Castle in Val di Non ; † January 9, 1670 ) was Prince-Bishop of Chiemsee from 1644 to 1670 .

Life

Franz Vigil von Spaur und Valör was born in Spaur Castle in the diocese of Trento . His parents were Georg Friedrich von Spaur and Barbara Countess Lodron . In 1637 the imperial barons Spaur and Valör were raised to the rank of imperial count .

After attending grammar school in Salzburg, Franz Vigil von Spaur and Valör studied from 1629 to 1633 as an alumne at the Collegium Germanicum in Rome, where he was ordained a priest on May 21, 1633. As early as 1632 he had a canonical at the Trento cathedral chapter , to which he resigned in 1644. In 1636 he obtained a preamble to the Salzburg cathedral chapter , which presumably led to his further advancement in the archbishopric. Since 1639 at the latest he has been the archbishop's councilor and on October 8, 1640 he was appointed governor by Archbishop Paris von Lodron , to whom he was related .

After the death of the Chiemsee Bishop Johann Christoph von Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn in 1643, Archbishop Lodron appointed Franz Vigil von Spaur und Valör as his successor on February 23, 1644. In addition, further advancements followed: in 1664 he was appointed Privy Councilor, in 1664 as President of the Court Council and in the same year as the dean of Salzburg Cathedral . He was also the Imperial Privy Councilor.

During his tenure as Bishop of Chiemsee, the Dominican monastery was founded in Kitzbühel in 1653 and in 1669 Scheffau became the seat of a vicariate. A loss for his parish occurred when Bartholomäus Holzhauser , the founder of a priestly community, gave up his position as pastor and dean of St. Johann in Tirol . The reason for the departure was presumably a dispute between Holzhauser and the archdeacon of Herrenchiemsee , in which it was a question of official powers and Holzhauser's participation in the synods of the archdeaconate. This dispute has been going on since the founding of the Deanery St. Johann in 1621. Although Bishop Franz Vigil von Spaur and Valör had already obliged the dean to participate in the archdeaconal synods in 1646, the presence of Holzhauser's successor is only documented for 1660.

Since Chiemsee was an own diocese of Salzburg, Franz Vigil von Spaur and Valör also performed tasks in the Archdiocese of Salzburg . After the death of Archbishop Paris von Lodron he took command of the Hohensalzburg Fortress and in 1654 he was involved in the consecration of Lodron's successor Guidobald von Thun . On December 8, 1668, he handed over the pallium to his successor Max Gandolf von Kuenburg on a papal order .

Outside of his district he founded an institute for poor girls in Berg am Laim near Munich. After his death he was buried in the family vault in Spormaggiore in the Non Valley.

  1. ↑ The date February 23, 1636 given in the cited source is probably a false statement, as the predecessor Johann Christoph von Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn only died on December 1, 1643 and did not resign from his office beforehand.
