Family coat of arms of the Lodron

Lodron is the name of an originally Italian aristocratic family from Trentino that also gained a foothold in the German-speaking area in the 16th and 17th centuries.

General and oldest time

The Lodron come from an area north of Lake Idro in Judicaria . A document from 1086 mentions a castle that can possibly be identified with Santa Barbara di Lodrone . The surname "Lodron" is also included in the name of the village of Lodrone in the Chiesetal ; it was first mentioned around 1086, but is probably much older. The county of Lodron occupied the upper Chiesetal north of Lake Idro, thus the southern tip of Judicaria (today the southwestern tip of Trentino) and existed until 1826, with an interruption due to the Napoleonic era.

The first mention of the Lodron comes from August 7th 1124, at that time they are named as Ministerials von Storo . 1185 a Calapino of Lodron is named as a vassal (miles) of Heinrich von Eppan ; he received from this fief in judiciary. 1189 Bondone is mentioned in his estate , where he probably had the Castello San Giovanni built on a rock spur.

As fiefs of the Prince-Bishop of Trient , the Lodron were able to expand their rule in the Chiesetal; Prince-Bishop Konrad II. De Beseno enfeoffed them, for example, with the Lodron Castle near Trono. In 1350 they bought the Castelromano castle .

In 1361, the Lodron split into two lines through a property distribution agreement that Albrigino I and his nephews Parisino II, Antonio and Pietrozotino concluded: The Lodron on Castel Romano and the Lodron on Castel Lodron.

In the 15th century, under Paris , the family experienced "the great" († 1439; son of Pietro Ottone (Pietrozotto) "il Pernusperto") and his two sons Giorgio (1400–1461) and Pietro († 1485), through clever alliances, hard but efficient management of their possessions and military successes as a military leader in foreign service an enormous upswing. The two sons were born in 1452 by Emperor Friedrich III. elevated to the imperial counts of the Holy Roman Empire , Castell-Romano and Lodron to imperial counties.

In 1456, the Prince-Bishop of Trento Georg Hack von Themeswald (1446–1465) commissioned the brothers, the Counts of Castelbarco, who refused to recognize the Prince-Bishop as a feudal lord, to remove the castles of Castelnuovo , Castellano , Nomi and Castelcorno. After a long and finally successful struggle, the Lodron received Castelnuovo and Castellano as a fief in 1486.

This means that the Lodron again split into two lines: The Giorgios line in Castel Lodron, the Pietros in the Lagertal , in Castelnuovo-Castellano ( Noarna Castle and Castellano Castle ).

The line from Vallagarina (the camp valley) or from Castelnuovo-Castellano

Of these two, the younger, Pietros, von Castelnuovo and Castellano im Lagertal, was the more short-lived, but more significant for German-Austrian history, since it was the origin of the Salzburg Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron.

Pietro had from his marriage to Margaretha von Nidlow (* 1381) a. a. the children Georg (* 1405), Paris IV. (* 1407) and Martin .

Through Paris' sons August (* 1471) and Nikolaus (* 1475) the line from Castelnuovo-Castellano branched out into the lines of Castelnuovo and Castellano.

The Castellano line died out with August's youngest son, Count Anton Lodron (1536–1615), who was last canon in Salzburg and became historically significant because he paved the way for his nephew and godchild Paris.

Nicolò (1475–1548), the one son of Paris IV (* 1407) and Veronica Coppa (* 1433) came to rule over Castelnuovo in 1532. His first marriage was Gentilia Countess von Arco (* 1499), who gave birth to her son Gasparo (* 1533), and his second marriage was Beatrice di Castellalto . Beatrice di Castellalto gave him the children Susanna (* 1535) and Paride (* 1538).

Gasparo served as an ambassador in Spain and Rome for Emperor Maximilian II . Paride fought for the emperor as a colonel in northern Italy and in Spain.

Paride had with Barbara von Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn the son Nicolò / Nikolaus Graf Lodron (* 1549 in Castelnuovo, † November 10, 1621 in Nogaredo), imperial colonel and governor of Tyrol.

This turned Castel Noarna into a baroque aristocratic residence. He also built the Palazzo Lodron in Nogaredo , first mentioned in 1553 , over whose main entrance in a niche his marble statue (probably representing him) watches over.

Nikolaus married Dorothea von Welsperg on May 27, 1585 (* 1559 - † November 4, 1615). They had the sons Paris (born February 13, 1586 at Castle Castelnuovo di Noarna; † December 15, 1653 in Salzburg ), Prince Archbishop of Salzburg, and Christoph (born July 5, 1588 Castelnuovo di Noarna; † November 30, 1660 Salzburg), who followed his brother Paris to Salzburg.

At Noarna Castle , one of the subsequent lords of the castle was Maximilian (* 1576; † 31 May 1635), grandson of Nikolaus Graf Lodron, son of the aforementioned Gasparo and Anna Berka, who in 1602 was Sybille Fugger (1585–1663; parents: Georg Graf Fugger , Herr zu Nordendorf and Wörth, and Helena Freiin von Madruzzo ) married.

Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron

Paris von Lodron (1586–1653), Prince Archbishop of Salzburg

The lasting anchoring of the Lodrons in the German-speaking area goes back to Paris von Lodron , who became Prince-Bishop of Salzburg in 1619 . During the Thirty Years War (1618–1648) he was able to keep the peace in Salzburg through a clever policy. In 1622 he founded the University of Salzburg , which today bears his name as Paris-Lodron University .

He secured possessions and positions for his family. So he set up a Fideikommiss, an inalienable property, for his brother Christoph and his first-born son as well as for the second-born son of the brother (Primogenitur and Secondogenitur); in particular, since 1639, Lodron Castle in Gmünd in Carinthia belonged to the Primogenitur Entity Commission and the Hereditary Land Marshal's Office in Salzburg was connected to it. Christoph had the New Palace built on the town square of Gmünd.

Although Christoph's line already went out with his sons Franz Niklas Graf zu Lodron and Paris Graf zu Lodron (* 1638 in Salzburg; † October 9, 1702), both of whom remained without male heirs, ownership passed to more distant lines of the Lodrons, the settled in Salzburg and Carinthia.

When the Lagertaler line of the Lodrons died out at their headquarters in Castelnuovo at the beginning of the 18th century, the Judiciary line succeeded them.

Castellano Castle was sold in 1922, Lodron Castle in Gmünd in 1932 and Noarna Castle (Castelnuovo) in 1974, while Palazzo Lodron in Nogaredo was bequeathed to other families.

The line from Castel Lodron

Giorgio I. Conte Lodron (* 1400 in Lodrone di Storo), first-born son of Paris' "the great" and Lucia Nogarola, married Zelmira Martinengo first and Giovanna (or Ginevra) Avogadro second. He died after a warlike life in 1461. His legitimate sons were Franz (I), Bernardin and Paris (III).

Giorgio also had an illegitimate son Marco da Caderzone (1425–1490). This actively participated in the conquest of the camp valley; In 1490, after being betrayed by his half-brother Paride Antonio Lodron, he was convicted of betraying his prince-bishop's liege lord and beheaded in Trento.

Furthermore, we have the lines of Francesco (Franz) I and Paris III. (Parisotto Antonio Lodron, 1463–1505).

The line from Paris III. (Parisotto Antonio)

One personality from this line should only be mentioned briefly:

Ludovico Lodron (* 1484 in Lodrone di Storo; † 1538), son of Count Parisotto Antonio Lodron (Paris III., 1463–1505) and Maria di Brembate, devoted his life to military service, mostly under the banner of Georg, who was related to his family from Frundsberg . On October 10, 1536 he married Orsola Cles in Trento . In 1538 he was captured and beheaded by the opposing Turks, and his head was brought to Constantinople as a trophy.

The line of Francesco (Franz) I.

Giorgio's son and successor at Lodron Castle was Francesco I. Conte di Lodron (1468–1505), married to Calepina Calepini and Diana di Collalto. Of his five sons, Paris V, Nikolaus (Nicola) and Giovanni Battista are important. Giovanni Battista Lodron (* 1480 in Casale Monferrato; † 1555), son of Francesco († after 1506) and Dina Collalto († 1507), was his first marriage with Violante Malaspina , his second marriage with Caterina Bianca von Stampey (1480– 1550) married. With his cousin Ludovico Lodron he served the Habsburg rulers Charles V , Ferdinand I and Maximilian II.

The line from Paris V.

Francesco's son Paride (Paris V) Lodron (1507–1550), who is buried in the church of Lodron, had twelve children, including four sons who reached adulthood: Gerolamo (Hieronymus, 1553–1606), Ludovico (1553– 1604), Francesco (1558–1579), and Paride (Canon of Trient); also the daughter Pina, who married Baron Hector (a descendant of the striped Martin) Lodron. The Trient line with the younger Salzburg Primogeniture goes back to him in particular, which is of interest from an Austrian and Bavarian perspective.

The line from Trento

Ludovico Lodron (* 1553; † 1604), son of Paride (Paris V), served as captain in the battle of the " Holy League " against the Turks. Together with his brother Gerolamo, he took part in the battle of Lepanto , the defense of Malta (1565) and the conquest of Tunis (1573).

In 1577 he married Beatrice Lodron, daughter of Paride Lodron, the head of the Castelnuovo-Castellano line. Probably in the same year he gave the order to build the Palazzo Lodron in Trento . He died childless. His grave is in the Cathedral of Trento. The inheritance came to the eldest son of his older brother Francesco (1558–1579), Gerolamo (1579–1639).

Gerolamo was followed by his son Paride (1626–1660), who in addition to the Palazzo in Trento also owned the Villa di Margone, another outstanding art monument in Trentino. These properties were inherited by the son Francesco Antonio (1674–1707), who sold Margone and left the Palazzo in Trento to his sons Paride and Girolamo Massimiliano (1711–1748).

As a result, the palazzo came into the possession of Michele Giovanni Giuseppe Lodron (1708–1773), the eldest son of Paride Lodron and Angela Malfatti, a canon of Trento , partly through sale ; he had the palazzo restored and expanded.

On January 4, 1743, Michele Giovanni Giuseppe Lodron renounced all of his goods in favor of his brother Antonio (1715-1773) and married Carolina Bellini de Fin at Freudenstein Castle , but kept two rooms in the palace, which he subsequently added Brother who left Paride to the priest.

When Antonio died, the palazzo and all other possessions went to the "Primogenitur of Trient", to his son Paride Giuseppe Maria (1772–1842).

Paride Giuseppe Maria was a knight of the Order of Malta, councilor of the imperial embassy in Stockholm and “Savio” of the municipality of Trento. He bought the Palazzo Lodron in Nogaredo to pay the debts of the late Francesco Maria Giuseppe Antonio Lodron (* 1765).
In 1835 he married Countess Ferdinandine von Bissingen and Nippenburg , daughter of Count Ernst and the Adelheid nee. Baroness of Salis-Soglio.
He died on January 12, 1842, before the birth of his younger son Ernesto Lodron (* May 3, 1842; † 1898).

Carlo Gaetano Lodron (born July 25, 1840 in Trient; † December 14, 1918 in Gmünd), the older son of Paride Giuseppe Lodron and Ferdinanda von Bissingen-Nippenburg, married Countess Antonie zu Lodron-Laterano in Vienna on May 22, 1865 and Castelromano (born December 20, 1839 in Vienna; † May 26, 1893 in Radegund), daughter of Constantin Lodron (1806–1880, from the Salzburg Promogenitur line) and Aloisia Countess Ugarte. After the death of his father-in-law and a legal dispute, he also obtained the Primogenitur goods including the Gmünd Castle, where he passed away on December 14, 1918.

Carlos' son Paride (* 1869; † 1925 in Gmünd) left three daughters, one of which, Maria Antonietta (1904–1933), married Alberich Maria Lodron (* 1895) from the secondary genealogy line.

The younger Primogenitur line

Pierer structured the Lodron-Laterano line in 1857 as follows:

I. Primogenitur Majorat. [...] The property includes the dominions of Castellano u. Castelnuovo in Welsch-Tyrol, the gentlemen Gmünd, Sommeregg u. Smoking gossip in Carinthia.
A) Primogenitur Majorate Line:
a) First branch, the primogeniture […].
b) Second branch, the Baier line, etc. though:
aa) the Baier line or Lodron-Haag, […];
bb) the Pettauer line or Lodron-Fürth ;; Boss […] Count Joseph (* 1766), is a senior a. Boss of the whole family u. has his residence in Graz.
B) Freudensteiner special line; Chief: […] Count Karl (* 1840), Lord of the Freudenstein Lordship in South Tyrol.

Bieberstein, the Hofmärkte Lampoding u. Wolkersdorf u. the castles of S. Giovanni, Laterano u. Sta. Barbara. [...]

At the beginning of the younger Primogenitur line stands Gerolamo Lodron (1579–1639), mentioned above as a fighter against the Turks and ancestor of the Trent line.

His son Philipp Jakob and his wife Victoria Collalto had the son Ferdinand Philipp or Philipp Ferdinand , married to Polyxena Waldstein. They had the sons Karl Wenzel (born August 26, 1682 in Nogaredo) and Franz Anton (born November 25, 1689).

Soon after 1703 there was a dispute about the succession in the Primogeniture. On May 31, 1707, Count Philipp Ferdinand was able to prove the right to primary education.

The Salzburg branch of the younger Primogenitur line

Karl Wenzl Graf zu Lodron (born August 26, 1682 in Nogaredo; † 1735) received the Primogenitur rule after his father. He was followed by his older son Ernst Maria Graf zu Lodron. In 1779, his son Hieronymus Maria Graf zu Lodron († 1824) - who of course suffered bankruptcy over his private assets in 1818 - took over the management of the family entrepre- neurship. His son Constantin Graf zu Lodron (* 1806, † 1880) entered the Primogenitur rule in 1824. With this last male offspring, the Primogenitur rule ended in Salzburg.

The second of the named, Hereditary Land Marshal Ernst Maria Joseph Johann Nepomuk Count Lodron (* May 30, 1716 - February 18, 1779), son of Count Karl Wenzel Lodron and Countess Maximiliane von Montfort -Tettnang, is in history as a patron of Mozart and known even more for the works written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for his second wife and daughters . He was first married to Johanna Countess von Kolowrat († 1757) and then married Antonia Felizitas Countess Arco (born October 13, 1738; † December 14, 1780), who was 22 years younger than him and had eight children.

His son Hieronymus Maria Graf Lodron has also  made a name for himself in Salzburg's cultural history - as a patron of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Michael Haydn . In 1787 he supported the establishment of the Protestant tolerance community in Fischertratten with a foundation .

The last male scion of the Primogenitur majorate line, Konstantin Graf zu Lodron-Laterano (born April 18, 1806 in Vienna, † February 21, 1880 in Vienna), worked in the Carinthian iron industry. He built a building on Kreuzbichl next to Gmünd in honor of his wife Aloisia nee. Countess Ugarte "Aloisienhütte" named iron rolling mill and expanded the existing works in Eisentratten. In 1861 he became a member of the Imperial Council.

He had the daughters

  • Marie Antoinette (born November 20, 1833 in Vienna, † November 25, 1912 in Vienna), married. Podstatzky-Liechtenstein , and
  • Antonie (born December 20, 1839 in Vienna, † May 26, 1893 in Radegund), married to Carlo Gaetano Lodron (1840–1918), son of the Paride Giuseppe Lodron and Ferdinanda von Bissingen-Nippenburg from the Trento line
  • Luise (born October 1, 1835 in Vienna; † May 9, 1892 in Vienna), married. Countess of Beroldingen
The Bavarian branch of the younger Primogenitur line
Hague Castle (1779)

In 1632 or 1635 Count Franz Lodron (* 1586; † May 8, 1666 in Haag) - from the Trento branch of the family - married the Baroness Maria von Flitzing, widowed von Stauffenberg. The Flitzing house owned several court brands north of Freising, Haag Castle and Triftern Castle in Lower Bavaria , the noble seats of Upper Turks and property in Landshut . Count Franz Lodron rebuilt Haag Castle, which was destroyed by the Swedes in 1632.

The successor was Guidobald Albrecht Graf zu Lodron († November 28, 1729), married to a Countess von Tattenbach -Rheinstein. The heiress (Maria) Anna Helene Josepha (born July 26, 1698 - † October 27, 1753) married her cousin Count Josef Anton zu Lodron-Laterano zu Castelromano (* 1705 - † 1775) on October 19, 1727 . Through this marriage, the name Lodron remained on Hague until the estate was sold in 1828. The last news from this branch of the family dates back to 1891.

The line of Nicola

A son of Francesco I and Diana di Collalto was also Nicola , married to Beatrice di Castelbarco. One of the sons from this marriage was Gerolamo Giovanni "Barbarossa" (1526–1579), lord of the County of Lodron.

Gerolamo "Barbarubra" and the younger secondary genealogy line

Gerolamo Giovanni “Barbarossa” (1526–1579), from his marriage to Elena Fontanabona (1543–1607) also had the son Gerolamo (Hieronymus) I “Barbarubra” (* 1587; † 13 August 1658), who was an imperial chamberlain . His first marriage was to Giulia di Zanetti and his second marriage to (Margaret Arco or) Caterina di Prospero d'Arco († 1621). married. In 1611 he inherited from Sigismondo Paride Lodron zu Salò a. a. the rule of the county of Lodron. His two sons Franz von Lodron (1614–1652) and Sebastian von Lodron (1601–1643) embarked on a spiritual career in Salzburg and eventually became bishops of Gurk , his son Gerolamo II of Lodron-Laterano (* around 1620, † 1657) ) became imperial military leader. In 1639, Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron entrusted him with the Salzburg troop contingent that he had to provide to the emperor during the Thirty Years' War .

Another son of Gerolamo "Barbarubra" was Nikolaus Georg . He and his wife Teodora Chizzola u. a. the son Sebastian Franz Paris. His youngest son was Ludwig Franz (born September 8, 1666), ancestor of the younger secondary school line (see below).

  • Sebastian Franz Paris Count of Lodron and Laterano had with his wife Anna Margaret, Countess Khuen of Belasy , at least the son Girolamo Giuseppe Paride (born August 8, 1694).
    • Girolamo Giuseppe Paride , Conte di Lodron-Laterano-Castelromano (* August 8, 1694), had at least the son Nicola Sebastino (* October 17, 1719) with his wife Anna Margaret, Countess of Wolkenstein-Trostburg .
      • Nicola Sebastino , Conte di Lodron-Laterano-Castelromano (born October 17, 1719) had the daughter Maria Carolina Anna (born April 25, 1756), married to his wife Maria Anna, Countess of Harrach . Countess Apponyi de Nagy-Appony.

Biberstein Castle in Himmelberg , Carinthia (owned by the family since 1662 until today)
Karl Franz von Lodron (1748–1828), Prince-Bishop of Brixen

In 1662, Countess Katharina Lodron bought Biberstein Castle (Carinthia) as the seat of the secondary school for 118,000 guilders from funds from the late Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron .

Nikolaus Georg's youngest son Ludwig Franz (* September 8, 1666) can be seen as the ancestor of the younger secondary genealogy line , who with his wife Eleonore Baroness Bartholdi (* 1682) the son of Joseph Nikolaus (* January 9, 1710/11; † 5 February 1791). Joseph Nikolaus had again with Maria Josepha Walburga nee Countess Fugger von Kirchberg and Glött the sons Franz Josef von Lodron-Laterano and Castelromano (* 1745) - who continued the line - and Karl Franz (1748–1828), last Prince-Bishop of Brixen .

One of the side lines of this line is that of Lampoding Castle in the Rupertiwinkel . In this context, the story of Hofmark Lampoding, which was part of the Secondogenitur Fideikommiss, is reported:

As far as the success of the ownership of the Hofmark Lampoding-Wolkersdorf is concerned, the rule seems to be a Sebastian Franz Joseph, then a Hieronymus Joseph, then his sons Nikolaus Sebastian and Anton Karl, later the latter's son Franz Maria Joseph and from this Hieronymus Paris (from 1794 to 1821 ) to have held. We know from Nikolaus Sebastian Graf Lodron that he stayed in Lampoding in 1766 and 1767 and that he also beautified the castle accordingly.

With the death of Hieronymus Paris on March 31, 1821, the Georgian line expires. Maria Alois Joseph, born on March 31, 1780, married to Maria Anna Gräfin Plaz, then tried to secure the legacy of the secondary school with detailed ancestry evidence and finally with success.

Maria Alois Joseph, a son of - the marriage of Joseph Nikolaus , Count of Lodron-Laterano (born January 9, 1710/11; † February 5, 1791) with Maria Josepha Walburga, nee. Countess Fugger von Kirchberg and Glött descendants - Count Franz Josef (1745–1791) of Lodron-Laterano and Castelromano.
