Noarna Castle

The Noarna Castle (also known as Castelnuovo di Noarna ) is located in the north-eastern Italian municipality of Nogaredo not far from Rovereto on a hill in Trentino , which is little protected by nature , from where the Adige Valley could be controlled.

history

Allegedly Noarna was built on the site of a Roman fortification . It is certain that the medieval complex was originally inhabited jointly by several families whose coats of arms are visible in the castle. In the 12th century the facility was called "Castelnuovo" (roughly "Neuburg"). This suggests that an older system was located here or nearby. It is believed that this older castle was built in the Lombard period of the 6th-8th centuries. Century falls.

The complex was owned by the Lords of Noarna until 1308 and then passed to Castelbarco as a fief of the Diocese of Trento . In 1456 the Prince-Bishop of Trento, Georg Hack von Themeswald, commissioned the brothers Georg and Peter Lodron to seize the castles of the now insubordinate Trentino vassal Johann von Castelbarco, which they succeeded in doing. As a result, the castle passed to the Petersche line of Lodrons as a fief.

Nikolaus Lodron (1475–1556), grandson of Peters and great-grandfather of Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron , made extensive changes and renovations and had the castle rebuilt into a renaissance palace. The frescoes above the main staircase, the tendrils and vedute in the winter garden and the coats of arms of the owners date from this time. Other rooms with ornamental furnishings date from the 16th and 17th centuries. They show u. a. Cartouches of the arms of the Counts of Lodron and their wives (Sibylle von Fugger, Anna Berka von Taub and Leipa). Presumably Paris Lodron had the chapel built into the castle, which was then designed by his court architect Santino Solari . In the 17th century Castelnuovo played a role as a prison in a great witch trial , eight people were sentenced to death and four of them were executed in Brancolino .

In 1876 the Lodrons left the castle and moved to the Palazzo Lodron in Nogareit , only one castellan remained on Castelnuovo. In 1974 the Lodron family decided to sell the facility to the Rofereiter hotelier family Zani. From this a biologically managed model winery was installed at the castle; the facility (winery including wine sale) can be visited and the castle is now open to the public through cultural events.

Castelnuovo di Noarna

description

The castle is a combination of a medieval castle and a renaissance palace. It has not lost its defensive character as a result of the renovation: trenches, portcullis , berings , drawbridges and loopholes are evidence of this. The low keep the plant does not exceed one side of the Palas . In the entrance area there is a picture of the Sistine Chapel .
