Castellano Castle today

Castle Castellano also concluded Kastellein ( Italian Castello di Castellano ) is the castle rebuilt, former castle in Castellano , in the municipality of Villa Lagarina in the Italian province of Trento .

history

The cubic structure with a watchtower has dominated the road from the valley towards Cei since the 12th century . The hilltop castle was built on a hill and was protected on three sides by embankments and slopes. The Adige Valley could be controlled from this location . Bailiffs of the Bishop of Trent are documented here in the late 12th century . From 1261 to 1456 Castellano was in the fief of the Lords of Castelbarco. In 1456, the Prince-Bishop of Trento Georg Hack von Themeswald commissioned the brothers Georg and Peter Lodron to seize the castles of the insubordinate Trento vassal Johann von Castelbarco. This also succeeded; the enmity between the two families was only ended after the peace treaty of 1479. Later both families were linked by connubium .

In 1456 the property passed to the Counts of Lodron as a fief . After the Salzburg canon Anton Lodron, the castle went to his cousin Nikolaus zu Castelnuovo, who was the father of Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron . The Lodrons had the former castle converted into a stately residence and decorated with frescoes . Today the castle still has some medieval elements, such as the crenellated curtain wall .

The castle was still inhabited by the Lodrons in the 18th century, when the complex, which had already become dilapidated, was left to the Morandi family. In 1922 they bought the castle and the castle is still privately owned by this family and can only be visited by telephone agreement with the owner.

The castle was damaged by an earthquake in 1878. There was a partial collapse in 1918 and a fire in 1932. Today is the former country palace dungeon obtained which possibly comes from the 8th century. Another tower-like building on the east side can be seen as the torso of the former palazzo. Both structures are connected at ground level with a covered building and the former outer wall.

Up until the fire of 1932 there was a representative hall with a frescoed band from 1585. It contained allegories of the four known continents, the four seasons and views of the landscape on the Adige. Five of these frescoes survived the fire and came to the City Museum of Rovereto in 1935 .

Feudal lords who lived in the castle

  • Lords of Bisein (Beseno), from 1166 to 1234
  • Lords of Castelnuovo, from 1234 to 1266

  • Counts of Lodron , from 1456 to 1922
